May 18th to 26th, 2009

Over the past week we have mainly been focusing on our Unit 10 Math. Lesson 10.1-10.5 were to be handed in for marking. Today we completed our Unit 10 Test. There is still many outstanding lessons to be handed in. The Unit Review for 10 may be completed for extra marks, along with the Unit Test.

We have also put a GREAT DEAL of time into our Writing Sense Picture Books. These are due by Monday, June 1st. Once again, some students have not used their time wisely in class and are very behind. This should be caught up for homework.

Finally students should have up to the end of Chapter 11 completed from Lost In the Barrens. The second quiz will be coming very soon.

Thanks

Just to review last weeks work, it seems as if some students are already on Summer Holidays in terms of work completion. Over the week the following assignments should have been completed and handed in!
1) Spelling Lesson 20
2) Math Unit 9 Review - Pages 410-412, #1-17, Practice Test - Page 413, #1-7, and Unit Problem - Charity Golf Tournament - Pages 414-415, #1-5

Meeting times for those schools have also been sent home for Tuesday and Friday (most have come back with parents/guardians coming in for meetings - this is very good to hear)

Speeches should also be worked on this weekend as they are fast approaching.

Thanks
Mr. H.

Why To Always Check Your Child's Homework!

(Here's the reply the teacher received the following day)
Dear Mrs. Jones,I wish to clarify that I am not now, nor have I ever been, an exotic dancer. I work at Home Depot and I told my daughter how hectic it was last week before the blizzard hit. I told her we sold out every single shovel we had, and then I found one more in the back room, and that several people were fighting over who would get it. Her picture doesn't show me dancing around a pole. It's supposed to depict me selling the last snow shovel we had at Home Depot. From now on I will remember to check her homework more thoroughly before she turns it in. Sincerely,Mrs. Smith

Hello

Today we had an assembly to kick off the M.S. Read-A-Thon at our school. I will be sending forms home tonight and students may start to gather sponsers. One main difference between the Read-A-Thon this year and the past is that it is by # of minutes (instead of # of books) this year. We have two incentives for the M.S. Read-A-Thon: 1) A pizza party to the class who raises the most money and 2) a dance in November for any students that raise at least $20 (this should be easy!!!). We will be reading EVERYDAY as part of the fundraiser! Lets raise some cash for a great cause!

Cookie Dough Fundraiser forms and money were due by today! Please bring tomorrow!

A Story Before Time and Post Secondary Information Day Forms were sent home last night. PALS forms and Halloween Fun Night Forms were sent home tonight. Please return as sooon as possible.

Today's work:
1) Language Power - Lessons 8-9 and Review (Test Thursday)
2) The Outsiders - All questions/worksheets due by Friday.

I'M BACK!!

Hello again to everyone! I'm back from the birth of my second child Vaive Michael Barrat Hickey! He was born on Saturday, September 27th @ 2:47am, weighing 7pound11ounces, in St. Joseph's Hospital. It was a very long Friday, but well worth everything with his arrival on Saturday. I would like to say thanks for all of the best wishes!

While I was away Mrs. Bacher was in for the week. I kept in contact with Mrs. Bacher and she stated that everything went pretty well. A couple of reminders to students about behaviour and work habits, but overall a good week!

This week we have been looking at where we are in the term and what we need to have done! It does seem that some students are starting to fall behind on their work, so today we have used as a catch up day on the following things:

SCIENCE PROJECT DUE TODAY - IS IT COMPLETE?
MATH UP-TO-DATE?
THE OUTSIDERS QUESTIONS/ASSIGNMENTS COMPLETE?
LANGUAGE POWER - UP TO LESSON 7 COMPLETE AND MARKED?
AUTOBIOGRAPHY ROUGH COPY COMPLETE AND READY FOR POWERPOINT?
LITERACY POWER UP-TO-DATE?
SPELLING LESSONS UP-TO-DATE?
MEDIA ASSIGNMENTS#1&2 COMPLETE?
HAVE YOU BEEN TAKING YOUR READ A LOUDS HOME AND READING/GETTING SIGNED BY PARENTS/GUARDIANS?
IS YOUR AGENDA COMPLETE?
HAVE YOU BEEN PUNCTUAL?
HAVE YOU HAD GOOD ATTENDANCE?
HAVE YOU SHOWN A POSITIVE ATTITUDE AND GOOD WORK HABITS IN CLASS?

I TALKED ABOUT THESE WITH THE CLASS TODAY AS *EVERYONE* EXCEPT FOR ONE STUDENT STAYED IN @ LUNCH YESTERDAY FOR MATH WORK WHICH WAS OVER A WEEK LATE! WE DO NOT WANT THIS TO BECOME A HABIT! MAKE SURE YOUR WORK IS COMPLETED AND YOU GET THE EXTRA HELP IF NECESSARY! (After School or Homework Support on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-9 at Polytech)

I have also talked with students about their completion of work and habits in regards to attending the Social tomorrow and the Hagersville Trip on Friday (note sent home)
School work needs to come first over everything!

One last note, I sent home a Cookie Dough Fundraising form with ALL of the students yesterday. Please try to sell as much as possible because it does go back to the students! The class that sells the most will have a pizza party! All money and forms are DUE BY: OCTOBER 20th!

Thanks
Good to be back!
Mr. Hickey
